Day 1 Filming Pictures
Here is a film I made of Day 1 filming in Epping forest, showing the locations we used and the actors in action.
Analysis of a professional product - 'Missing You' The Saturdays
I will be analysing 'Missing You' by The Saturdays. The song was written by Alexander Kronlund and Lukas Hilbert with production from Hilbert and James Reynolds, the song was released as the collection's lead single on 5 August as a digital download and on 9 August as a CD single. .

It was released on 5th August 2010 and its target audience is teenage girls aged between 10-18, although their videos also target teenage/young men due to the lack of clothing and provocative dance routines which aren't really targeted at young females to enjoy
There is no relationship between the lyrics and the visuals as there are no shots of a couple in a relationship or no flashbacks to help illustrate the story. Therefore the visuals do not illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics.
Although there is a relationship between the music and the visuals as the style of the music is not particularly upbeat therefore there are no huge, fast, intricate dance routines but a slow one to match the music. Towards the end of the song the music becomes more upbeat and dancy, so they change locations to a club where there is more dancing as this part of the song could be played in a club. The 'Missing You' video is typical of a girl band/pop music video as it contains many individual shots of the performers and a dance routine.
There are a lot of close-ups in the video which is for a number of reasons.

1 reason could be that record companies demand a lot of close-ups of performers. Or it could be because the girls are very pretty and appealing to a male audience. Close-ups are very common in pop music videos be it male or female. This close up of Frankie shows her face and figure which has been deliberately done to attract viewers.
I think the image the Saturdays are trying to create in this music video is a sexy and sophisticated look. This is a look The Saturdays often go for but they are able to accentuate it in this video as the location means they can wear small bikinis and revealing dresses. There is no inter textual references in this video.

There is a lot of different camera work in this video. For example the camera follows the girls' dance moves during the routine and circles them to make them look important. It also gives the viewer a good view of the girls from every angle. The camera also tends to follow the girls as they prance around on rocks or by trees as it makes the audience want to continue following them.
The editing used is very simple as there are no fast-cut montages or effects such as split screen. A lot of simple cuts from long to medium to close-up are used which is typical of that of a girl band music video. The song isn't particularly fast paced therefore lots of quick cuts would not look right. There is also no examples of CGI effects used as I think the song is simple so deserves a simple video. There is no cutting between a narrative and a performance.

Long shot to..

Medium shot to..

Close up.
In this video The Saturdays are trying to represent young, beautiful women in many different ways. As I mentioned earlier the girls are using how the look to they're

advantage - for example they have nice bodies and figures so they are showing them off in skimpy but not slutty outfits. This is common of a girl band video as girls in girl bands tend to be good looking and have nice figures.
The critical reception for this video wasn't too good. A lot of comments on you tube are negative and think the video is boring and uninteresting. Although The Saturdays have a huge fan base and they're fans love the song and the video. What makes this video a successful example of the genre is the location and the band themselves. I think they're USP is that the are all good looking and are able to sing and dance.
Production Plan
Official lyrics 'Missing You'
The Saturdays - Missing You Lyrics :-
Frankie:
I miss missing you
I miss missing you
Frankie:
Wheres the pain when you walk out the door?
It doesn't hurt like it used to before
Wheres the love that we couldn't ignore?
It doesn't kick like a pill anymore
Wheres the thrill at the end of our fights?
Wheres the heat when we turn out the lights?
Vanessa:
I just miss all the mess that we made
When we still had the passion to hate!
All:
I miss missing you, sometimes
I miss hurting you, till you cry
I miss watching you, as you try
Try not to end up in tears
Beggin' to get back together
I just want you to be,
To be stuck in the second forever
So don't freak out if I leave!
Mollie:
Sometimes I'm just missing, missing you
Frankie:
I miss missing you
Vanessa:
There's a dark cloud pulling me in,
Thats the girl, I was bathing in sin,
There's a blind force letting it win,
And its longing to tear us apart
Mollie:
I get high when you're making me weak,
Let me down till I crawl on my knees
Rochelle:
I just miss all the mess that we made
When we still had the passion to hate!
All:
I miss missing you, sometimes
I miss hurting you, till you cry
I miss watching you, as you try
Try not to end up in tears
Beggin' to get back together
I just want you to be,
To be stuck in the second forever
So don't freak out if I leave!
Vanessa:
Sometimes I'm just missing, missing you
Frankie:
I miss missing you
Rochelle:
I wanna rush in your arms at the other side of the road
Rochelle:
I wanna die for you cause love is only true if it hurts!
All:
I miss missing you, sometimes
I miss hurting you, till you cry
I miss watching you, as you try
Try not to end up in tears
Beggin' to get back together
I just want you to be,
To be stuck in the second forever
So don't freak out if I leave!
Rochelle:
Sometimes I'm just missing, missing you
Frankie: I miss missing you
Feedback from music video pitch
We presented our pitch to the rest of the class on Friday 10th September. During out pitch we made sure everyone had the opportunity to speak and here is some of the feedback we recieved:
- Our pitch and ideas were well thought out and planned carefully.
- In our pitch we briefly mentioned how we wanted to target a more mature audience in our video. We verbally explained this in more detail and told the class how we would do this more in the digi-pack and magazine advert than the video itself.
- When we explained how we wanted to use the natural enviroment to film in and how we wanted to use nature as props, we recieved good feedback and our audience thought this was a good idea as it would look very good in the video. We explained about filming in Epping Forest which has lots of different natural enviroments and we were advised about which weather condition would look best. This meant we had to carefully plan when to film as we needed to catch the weather at the best times.
- The fact that we had a very clear intended audience and our planned use of flashbacks meant our idea was well recieved as it added variety.
- We recieved more posotive feedback when we explained what we wanted to do with our outfits in each location. We decided on wearing similar autumn/winter clothes for the Epping shoot and black dresses with each of us wearing a different coloured pair of heels for the barn shoot. The audience thought this was a good idea because it slightly differentiated everyone in the group but looked right. We decided to make this our USP because we thought it would looking interesting on camera.
- Overall our pitch was very successful. There was no negative feedback and all the audience understood the concept of our video and the look we were going for. The audience could tell our plan was well thought out. We could have improved our pitch by adding pictures of the actors and crew although we did include self-taken pictures of the outfits.
